How to jump start a car, the correct procedure

 

  1. Locate a car with a good battery: Find another vehicle with a good battery that can be used to jump start your car.

  2. Position the cars: Position the two cars so that they are facing each other with the hoods open. Make sure that the two cars are not touching.

  3. Turn off both cars: Make sure both cars are turned off and the keys are removed from the ignition.

  4. Connect the jumper cables: Connect the red cable to the positive (+) terminal on the dead battery. Then, connect the other end of the red cable to the positive (+) terminal on the good battery. Connect the black cable to the negative (-) terminal on the good battery. Then, connect the other end of the black cable to an unpainted metal surface on the car with the dead battery. This can be any piece of exposed metal, like a bolt or a bracket.

  5. Start the engine on the working car: Start the engine on the car with the good battery and let it run for a few minutes.

  6. Attempt to start the dead car: Attempt to start the car with the dead battery. If it starts, let it run for a few minutes to charge up the battery.

  7. Disconnect the jumper cables: Once the car with the dead battery is running, disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order that you connected them. First, disconnect the black cable from the unpainted metal surface on the dead car. Then, disconnect the black cable from the negative (-) terminal on the good battery. Next, disconnect the red cable from the positive (+) terminal on the good battery. Finally, disconnect the red cable from the positive (+) terminal on the dead battery.

  8. Keep the car running: Keep the car running for at least 30 minutes to ensure that the battery is fully charged.
